Ever notice how… (#1)
You know the battle with Volvagia in Ocarina of Time? You have to hit him with your giant hammer when he pops out of his magma hole. There are five holes, so you don’t know which hole he will pop out of. And you hit him with a mallet. Sound familiar to anyone? Yep, your battle with the great lava dragon is just one big game of Whack-a-mole.
It’s amazing what you can see if you look at things from a different perspective.
Another example: you know the Shadow Temple boss? His name is Bongo Bongo. Guess who had uncaring parents. Anyway, he is probably called so because the entire boss fight is him playing a giant bongo drum. You stand on the drum and bounce around with every tap of his hands on the drum skin (although if you use the hover boots you are nearly stabilized). He tries to swat you off with his giant hands, and if they hit you, you can’t do anything about it. So when the hands come near, you either dodge or strike them, causing Bongo to pull them back and try to shake off the pain. He then lowers his head and bingo! You can shoot him in his big, obviously vulnerable eye.
But think of it like this: A street musician is trying to make a living. He finds he’s talented with rhythm and picks up drumming. He brings his bongos to the temple to play for his undead friends (because everyone knows Gibdos tip well, right?). But what’s this? A tiny, indistinct figure leaps onto his drum. It rolls and jumps, distracting him and ruining his tempo. He tries to swat it off, but the thing bites back, hacking tiny cuts into his hands. He stops playing altogether, and the crowd boos. Desperate to win them back, he makes a final effort and bends down to get a good look at this strange and dangerous creature. He has just enough time to get a glimpse of a small boy in green, when an arrow the size of a splinter flies up at impossible speeds and impales his single eye, blinding him for life.
Congratulations. You just ruined the career and subsequently the life of an honest worker.
Some of these boss fights can be so weird if you look at them the right way.
